I spotted this wonderful quartet of older ladies on an afternoon walk into Como…when I first noticed them two of the four were furiously fanning themselves (it was blazingly hot here today), but by the time I framed the shot the woman on the right had folded up her fan. The “shot” I first saw was better than the shot I got, but that’s the way it goes. At least I caught them without being noticed.
There are many details about this photograph that I love…the carefully tended hairdos, the handbags, the eyeglasses, the near-musical rhythm of their hand gestures…and all those practical, comfortable shoes. Their quiet companionability suggests that they might be four sisters, or otherwise friends for a good long time.
