Nantucket is my favorite place in the world to celebrate the 4th of July; it reminds me of my childhood, when they actually had fireworks ON the 4th (where I now live, the bang is taken out of the holiday because the fireworks are always set off a day or two early so they don’t have to pay the police overtime). Growing up, I remember decorating my bicycle with red, white and blue crepe paper and riding in the neighborhood parade that preceded the neighborhood picnic. Here, most houses are decorated with flags, large and small, and all the town shops feature their merchandise in red, white and blue. Tomorrow’s festivities include pie and watermelon-eating contests, kids with bicycles festooned with crepe paper, a fire hose fight on Main Street, AND fireworks, ON the 4th of July.
I pass this classic salt box Nantucket house every day on my walk into town, and love its sophisticated yet festive decor.
