This recently restored mural in Nantucket Town was the subject of a short documentary film titled “Not Just a Sign,” which premiered at the 2007 Nantucket Film Festival. Originally painted by H. Marshall Gardiner to adorn the side of his gift and photography shop, the mural is of little help when trying to navigate the island, but charms many a passerby. Interestingly, Daytona Beach and Mackinac Island are places where Mr. Gardiner spent childhood summers.
The mural now graces the side of the local Ralph Lauren shop (and all along I thought there were no chain stores on Nantucket). I guess on this preppiest of islands they just had to make an exception for Mr. Lauren, but, much to his credit, he played an important role in restoring this charming piece of public art.
